Oval nails are commonly used for tasks like flooring and skirting boards, where a smooth or concealed surface is desired. When driven into wood with their longer sides parallel to the grain, they are much less likely to cause splitting than other nails.
Their reduced risk of splitting makes oval nails particularly favoured in intricate woodworking projects. However, they’re also excellent for attaching hardboard siding and joining heavy timbers. Once installed, they can be punched below the surface.
